Our Africa Group 3 For over 50 years, Shearman & Sterling has been advising clients across both North and Sub-Saharan Africa. During that time, we have become synonymous with advising on first-in-kind transactions and complex disputes across a range of industries. With a distinguished track record in Africa, we have been advising on landmark deals throughout the Continent. What differentiates us from others is that we have a commercial edge. Clients value our ability to navigate the legal issues but also look forward to the commerciality of the deal and what this means for them. This experience has given us extensive knowledge and understanding of the cultural, political, social and commercial environments in jurisdictions throughout Africa. Together with our relationship local law firms, we advise clients on their most strategic transactions and significant international disputes. Our team's commitment to Africa is also demonstrated in our commitment to our pro bono work, a snapshot of which is provided on page 12. We regularly advise sponsors, commercial lenders, banks and financial institutions, investment and development banks, governments and state-owned companies, funds and investors on all essential corporate disciplines – including project development, M&A, private equity, capital raising and investment transactions. We have also appeared as counsel in multiple international disputes related to Africa. Our integrated Africa team includes lawyers based in Abu Dhabi, Beijing, London, New York, Paris and Washington DC, who can advise on English, French and New York law. We have also developed extremely strong relationships with leading independent local law firms in jurisdictions across the continent. Not being tied to any particular local firm allows us to select the firm and lawyers best suited to your needs and work with them to provide you with seamless international and local law service. We mobilise lawyers from our dedicated Africa Group into teams with the right experience for all types of matters. Multilingual, and able to advise and negotiate in English, French, Portuguese, Spanish and Cantonese/Mandarin, the team is also very familiar with, and regularly advises on, matters governed by OHADA law, the common body of commercial and company laws applicable in 17 African countries. "Shearman & Sterling have been absolutely excellent. They are driven to get results and overcome obstacles, they are solution-oriented. They have a real depth of experience." Chambers Global: Africa-Wide – Projects & Energy "Shearman is, in my opinion, one of the most competent in the field of international arbitration. The management was excellent and cost-effective, while providing a service of a quality exceeding my expectations." Chambers Global: Africa-Wide – Dispute Resolution
